A rich macerated amber wine made with Pinot Gris from Sremski Karlovci, Fruška Gora, Serbia. The name “Jantar” comes from the old Slavic word for “amber”.

An unbelievably layered and complex wine, boasting unusual and moreish sweetness coupled with a tickle of tannic and herbaceous bitters. Despite Jantar's immense personality, there is no doubt that it is an elegant and dignified wine with surprising lightness and lack of headiness for an ABV of over 15%.

Although this is a white/orange wine, the season these grapes were harvested in was a particularly hot one, resulting in a cuvée the colour of pinot noir.

This wine loves to breath, so resist the temptation to plow straight in and decant a few hours before consuming, more if you’re patient. This wine is exceptionally stable after opening, with the pinot gris really coming through after some time open. Serve slightly chilled, 12-16 degrees C  is recommended (or straight from the fridge!).

*** EXTRA *** If you're feeling brave, be like Bojan and try a glass at room temp, it's delicious!

About the winemaker:

Baša Vino is the small family natural wine project by winemaker Bojan Baša, bottling limited quantities of extremely high quality natural amber wines. Baša’s vinyards are located in Serbia on the right bank of Danube river, in Sremski Karlovci on Fruška Gora mountain between Novi Sad and Belgrade. Baša uses organic and biodynamic practices and preparations without the use of any pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or artificial fertilisers. In the cellar Baša practices low intervention, working traditionally without the use of modern enological preparations. Baša works with indigenous Serbian varieties such as Tamjanika, Furmint and Morava, and from spring 2021 Grašac Beli and Prokupac. Currently the only international variety he works with is Pinot Grigio.

Additional tasting notes:

“Luigi Veronelli would call this "vino da meditazione", as this calls for more than just drinking. There is so much going on, from the gorgeous dark amber color, to a gorgeous mix of floral, herbal and dried fruit that it delivers. However, this is more about the texture than aromatics and flavor. The brilliance of this wine is in its ability to orchestrate a perfect harmony between power and poise. At over 15% of alcohol, the wine is drinking so gracefully, resembling the strength and elegance of a gymnast, and it is all thanks to the firm core created by its acidity and tannins. And while we're at tannins, decant this beauty and let them melt, leaving a velvety impression on the finish.” Aleks Zečević, wine writer.
